Dished

A smattering of photos from my "Dished" time-lapse stitched together for a pseudo star trail photo. There were too many clouds to do have nice long trails, but I mixed in the best shots for some interesting clouds to go with the stars. Made from 54 individual photos, all 30 second exposures at 800 ISO, f/3.5 aperture, focused on the receiver. I've found that focus on an object very close to the camera actually makes for a more pleasing sky, since the stars will appear as larger circles-of-confusion. (It's not like it's going to resolve them anyways). Next clear night, I'll try to get another proper star trail photo done. With my new setup, I can do nearly 800 continuous photos over about 6 hours, so the trails should be very long. Please do not use this photo without my permission, but feel free to ask :-)

grandmother's dishes

Since I just moved in to a new place, my mom is loaning me my grandmother's dishes. These were her "everyday" dishes that she bought the year she was married (1939). I really like using them. They remind me of her impeccable sense of style. And it feels nice to redeem something from the attic â€” the dishes have sat unused in boxes for years, because they don't fare well in a dishwasher. But my place doesn't have a dishwasher, so we're set. What's shown above is just one place setting. These people knew how to set a table. There are so many dishes with each place setting that I am confused about what each dish is for (see notes).

Dish Controllers

Amateur radio controllers adjusting the dish azimuth settings near Parkes, Australia. This radio telescope played an extraordinary role in the four-day Apollo XI mission in July 1969 by capturing and televising the historical lunar landing to the world. This was dramatised in a film called "The Dish" using this control panel mockup.

Stupid Dish Network HD DVR Problem

The Dish Network HD DVR up-converts a standard definition signal to HD, adding black bars on the side, and eliminating my ability to stretch the signal to fill the TV. What a rip! Any idea how to fix it? Blogged here.

Four Dish 7 LNB Tree

This is the ulimate atnenna tree. Can you pick the networks this "VSA" or Very Small Array of antennas can pull in? From the top down: UHF HDTV, Primestar getting FTA from IA5/Telstar 5, Dish Network foreign/HDTV, Dish 500 and finally all three birds for DirecTV. There could be some additional Ku LNB's on the Primestart antenna - hanging on either side of the single H/V feedhorn for some more action since that's a large surface area dish. All that is missing is a huge C-Band mesh antenna behind it on a 30' pole attached to the eves of the roof. Those were fun when the wind got gusty.

The Beauty Dish

Here is the beauty dish I made on a light stand. It is partly leaning on the umbrella adaptor, partly being held up by the flash (Canon 430ex) itself. Other DIY designs I've seen had a metal L bracket to support the dish. The dish is unweildy and weighs about 4 lbs. I used a jigsaw and a drill to make a rectangular hole in the bottom of the bowl so that it will fit the head of the Canon 430ex). UPDATE: two years later I have a real beauty dish made by Paul C Buff.

I know there is no beauty (or not?) in the picture. Its just me testing the beauty dish i just made!! LOL! I love not spend money! It costs me about US15,00 to build it. Unfortunately they didn't have any reflector bigger than 16" in the light store. But sure its a pretty nice result since it costs to low. Next step is add an diffuser in front of it as optional use. Its only the dish illuminating here. In the mean while i decided to upload a self portrait i have recently taken using a beauty dish i have been making in some 3d workshops at college. I made the dish using a light bowl from B&Q as well as making other parts using the vacuum former. I like the effect i can get using the beauty dish with my Bowens 500, it seems to give images nice depth with a lovely soft light. thanks to some ideas around the net...my attempt at a DIY beauty dish... 10 bucks! 16inch wok cover I found in the trash. Empty CD container . Some Fusion paint that sticks to metal and plastic. 3.75 inch convex self sick mirror. Downspout / gutter insert. Some self tap tec screws check back with me in a few days ill post the finished product and modifications

Beauty dish overkill

Was testing out new looks for subjects recently and wound up escalating to this self-portrait mug -- both DIY beauty dishes and all my strobes and a reflector contributed to this one. Plus a little vanity retouching in Photoshop... Satellite Dish Park

This is a park in Kemerovo, Russia. It's two or three blocks from the main post office, which I imagine is the destination of the signals received here. It is important to note that the pillared building is two stories tall. The small dish is as large as those big ones still seen in rural areas, the big one is huge! The River Tom is just beyond the park, you can see the far bank above. To the right is a monument to those who died in World War II. (BTW, here is another view of the same park.)
